Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where successful YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Coco, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!
Coco Day is a successful YouTuber in England that has over 28,000 subscribers and 2.6 million views. Her most popular video on her channel has over 1.8 million views! In this blog post, she reveals her inspiration, the top 3 tips she has for smaller channels, and opportunities she has gained from her channel.
"Make videos you ACTUALLY like and not what you think people will like."
What inspired you to create your YouTube channel?
I’ve loved watching YouTube since I was about 11 (in 2010) and always wanted to have my own channel. I was a bit obsessed with Zoella so I guess she was my initial inspiration.
Do you think your family or background/where you grew up influenced your content? you talk about how your parents or siblings affected your YouTube channel?
I’m not too sure, I think the types of videos I make could be made by anyone regardless of where they come from; I mean anyone can do a vlog. Plus, I’ve always been a bit different to my family because I’m more involved in sustainability and I’m a bit more creatively inclined but I definitely think my family’s love for health and fitness has influenced me that way.
How long does it take you to edit a video?
It REALLY depends on the video and also my mood. Sometimes it can take 6 hours and others can take 24; long story short it takes AGES. But, luckily, I love doing it!
What are your top 3 tips to small YouTubers starting a channel?
Make videos you ACTUALLY like and not what you think people will like.
Try and upload consistently (e.g one video a week) because it’s nice for your audience to have something to always look forward to. But also, don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
Be patient, nothing happens overnight.
How do you find new opportunities with brands? Do you reach out to them or do they just email you?
Brands usually come to me but I also think it’s okay to approach them!
This doesn’t necessarily have to be concerned with brands, but what is the best opportunity you’ve gotten from your YouTube channel?
There’s quite a few. Making some online friends, chatting with subscribers, working with brands I really love, etc. But there’s this one thing that I think is so cool. It might seem small to others, but this musician I really love sent me his new song before he released it, and I just sat in my room with my headphones on, listening to it on repeat.
Finally, what is your experience with hate and do you have any advice on how to deal with it?
I’ve been pretty lucky so far with very little/no hate but I have got the odd comment that made me really sad. But, I think I’ve learnt to deal with it better now by not taking it to heart and also just not engaging with them AT ALL. Delete the comment if you want and move on, but just do not respond because it’s not worth it and will probably make you feel worse.
