How Grace Smith Grew Her YouTube Channel - The Creator Confidential

Hello there! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Grace, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!

This is the story of how Grace Smith grew her channel to over 48,000 subscribers and 5.1 million views! Through her mainly college-related content/videos, she had the opportunity to create her own clothing line with Bonfire, work with several mainstream brands, and more! In today’s blog post, she shares how she started, tips for smaller creators, and how to deal with hate both in person and online.

What inspired you to create your channel?

As cliche as it sounds- I was truly born inspired! From the time I could begin talking I was always pretending I was talking to a camera or on a TV show. What continues to inspire me (now that I have been doing it for quite a few years) is following and watching other creators!

How long does it take to edit one of your videos?

I would say editing one video can take anywhere from 2-6 hours! It truly is different just about every time!

What are some of the tips you would give to small YouTubers trying to start a successful YouTube channel?

1. Fill yourself with inspiration and passion! Success does not typically come overnight- especially if you create a channel for the wrong reasons; in hopes of fame or money. If you are truly passionate, these things will come!

2. Just start! It does not matter if the closest thing you have to a camera is an old iPhone I started on my iPhone 6 and transitioned to purchasing a real camera after I really fell in love with it!

Have you ever become unmotivated to post on your channel? If so, why and how did you get past that?

Honestly, I have never had a period of time like this- but sometimes when I go to edit when I know I need to get an upload up I feel unmotivated. Whenever this occurs I typically step away and do something else then come back to it. I only like to create when I am truly inspired so that I can do my best work!

How do you find new opportunities with brands? Do you reach out to them or do they just email you?

I come across most opportunities by leaving my work email in my video description box- which they then reach out to me through.

Do you have any tips on how to balance college/life with your YouTube channel?

Prioritizing your time! If you truly are serious and love something- it won't be hard to make time for it! Set aside time in your schedule to work on YouTube each week just like you would set aside time to do your math homework!

Can you describe your process of creating a clothing line with Bonfire?

Working with Bonfire was such a fun time and I loved that merch line! I started by agreeing to Bonfire's plans after they reached out and then sketching and sending in some inspiration. I had a design team allocated to me and worked with them over various days pinning down the perfect design! From there it was pretty easy- all of the promo and advertising was on me but Bonfire handled the launch date, orders, and customer service! I had so much fun with it and currently am planning on possibly creating another line!

Finally, what is your experience with hate (in school or online) and do you have any advice on how to deal with it?

I personally have received much tougher times with hate in school than online. My number one advice for any creator who goes through that is to remember your goals, why you started, and keep on creating! People with mean words to say won't stick with you for the rest of your life but what you create out of your life at a young age will prove to offer you with amazing opportunities that you will always have as yours!
