Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous and successful YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. However, if you’ve been keeping up with the blog recently, you know that I’ve been expanding to interviewing small YouTubers. (If you want to be interviewed, follow my Instagram @thecreatorconfidential). Today’s blog post is something very special, because instead of interviewing a successful YouTuber, I interviewed a successful TikToker! The app TikTok has been all over the place lately, as people like Charli D'amelio have blown up. So, when Harvey reached out to me over Instagram about being interviewed, I had to say yes! He is the first TikToker I have interviewed, and I hope to continue this as a series with Instagrammers, business owners, and more! Anyways, over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing him, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!
Harvey Aylmer started posting videos on TikTok on February 21st, this YEAR! His very first video has almost 600,000 views! But, his success on TikTok didn’t stop there. His second video, “Best Excuses to Get Off Facetime”, has over 2.8 million views and 600k likes. From there, he has consistently posted videos and taken off! He has over 111k followers, 3.7 million likes in total, and in this blog post, he shares his key to success!
Why did you choose TikTok as your platform? What made you want to start posting videos on your account and when did you start?
I chose TikTok as my platform as I had the app because all my friends had it. Also, it is a lot easier to get popularity from Tiktok rather than Instagram or YouTube. At first, I hardly went on the app, but then after some time I thought I could do that! I created one video and since then I have been obsessed.
Why did you choose to make the type of videos that you make? Would you categorize yourself under a certain niche topic?
I chose to create the videos that I make because it is what I would want to pop up on my “for you” page. Because then, you know you are making videos that you enjoy. You can get lost in the sense of “this person made this video and it blew up so I can do the same thing”. I would like to think my niche is comedy as I like to make people laugh. And, it is the only type of video I watch as I go on TikTok for an escape!
Top 3 tips you’d give to aspiring TikTokers?
Stay consistent, as your followers follow you to see more content from you.
Try and make original content, as you never know what video you thought of could blow up!
Do not compare your growth to someone else’s, as nothing happens overnight. Everything takes time.
The second video you made got over 2.8 million views! That’s really amazing! Did this surprise you? Was this growth just overnight? Can you describe your reaction?
I know, it's insane!! This definitely did surprise me because I never thought I would be able to create a video that would get that kind of attention. I think the video got over 700k views in 24 hours, but this growth carried on until it reached 2.8 million views and nearly 20,000 shares. It was growth overnight, and it gave me the confidence to create more videos like that, which at the time was out of my comfort zone.
What’s your favorite video that you’ve made on your account?
My favourite video I have created on my account would probably be my “Things we're all scared to do at night" as I find them so relatable and just over the top. It also helped that people seemed to enjoy them! Many people were tagging their friends, so I started to make them into a little series!
Are there any TikTokers you look up to in terms of similar content?
I try not to look up to anyone on TikTok as I want to be myself on the app. If I see a video idea on my for you page that I want to create, I will try and make it my own by adding different bits to it.
Are there any lessons you’ve learned from blowing up on TikTok?
Yes, definitely! I used to stay on TikTok if a video was starting to “blow up” because I used to like the surprise in the morning of the new followers that I had gained overnight. But, videos can stop blowing up whenever (e.g. an hour, or it could keep blowing up a week later). I definitely now take it as it comes and don’t get too excited by it all.
What is your experience with hate (in real life or in comments) and how do you deal with it?
I am lucky enough to say I have not had that much hate from doing TikTok, but I do sometimes get some little comments every now and then. If I see any I usually just delete them, but I tell myself once a video starts going well, I won’t read any comments because I’m aware that there might be some people hating on it. I don’t really care. In real life I do not get any hate from it as I am lucky enough to surround myself with the most amazing, supportive friends.
