Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous and successful YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Isabelle, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!
Isabelle Dyer started the YouTube channel she has today during her senior year of highschool. The first video she posted was just 3 years ago! Ever since she started posting consistently, her channel has grown to over 30,000 subscribers and 2 million views. She has worked with many popular brands, such as Princess Polly. Isabelle’s tips for growing a channel just like hers are extremely helpful- she talks about the right time for revealing your channel to the people in your life, how to deal with hate comments, why passion is the key for growing your channel, and much much more!

What inspired you to create your channel? When did you start?
I have always loved watching YouTube since I was young. I remember looking up to all of the “og” YouTubers like Amanda Steele, Bethany Mota, and Meredith Foster, and wanting to have my own channel. When I was in middle school I actually started a channel with one of my good friends at the time where we would make videos- that channel is deleted now, but it was technically my first YouTube channel. I decided to start my own YouTube channel my senior year of high school just for vlogs and to make fun videos to look back at with my friends. I would periodically make videos through my Senior year of highschool and Freshman year of college, but the summer before my Sophomore year of college I started to take YouTube more seriously.
Do you think your family or background/where you grew up influenced your content? Can you talk about how your parents affected your YouTube channel?
My family has always been supportive of me through everything I do. My mom at first was not really sure what YouTube was and didn’t think much of me starting a channel or making videos, but once I started to gain a following and opportunities she was excited to learn more and help me with my channel. I always find her watching my videos which is so cute, and she loves giving me feedback on them. I think that growing up in a Chicago suburb, no one that I knew did YouTube or really anything putting themselves out on the internet. But now, I think that it is much more common to put yourself out there, especially with apps like TikTok blowing up.
Were you afraid to tell other people in real life about your channel when you first started out? What advice would you give to small YouTubers who have a channel but don't want others to know about it?
Yes! I didn’t tell anyone about my channel at first- especially like I mentioned before how no one was making videos in my high school, I didn’t want it to be something I would be made fun of for. But as I continued on with my channel, and especially as I was gaining subscribers, I realized that this was something I am passionate about and proud of- so why not tell people about it?
My close friends and family knew about my channel, but I would say it actually took until about this year to get to the point where I was comfortable promoting my channel on my Instagram and bringing it up in conversation without downplaying it. Now, I will proudly post my videos and milestones on my Instagram stories and the responses I have received supporting me, both from my subscribers and people from my life, are so encouraging. I would say if you are starting a channel, you should definitely tell your close friends and family- people that you trust. And once you feel comfortable and confident in your channel you can start to tell more people. It is all about your own pace and what you feel comfortable with, but if it’s something you’re truly passionate about, people will see that and respect it!
How do you find opportunities with brands? Also, this doesn't necessarily have to be about brands but: What is one of the best opportunities you've been given because of your channel?
All of the brands that I have worked with have reached out to me, either through my business email or through Instagram DM. I think that making a business email specifically for brands/opportunities, having it linked in the description of every video, and putting it in your Instagram for brands to reach out to you is really helpful. One of the best opportunities I have gotten because of my channel is working with some of my favorite brands like Princess Polly, Loving Tan, and Blackbough Swim. All of these brands are brands that I have bought from and love and getting the opportunity to work with them is a dream come true!

Top 3 tips you would give to small YouTubers trying to start a successful YouTube channel?
Do it because you love it. I personally wouldn’t recommend starting a YouTube channel for the numbers, for the money, or for the brand deals. All of those things are amazing perks that come with having a channel and creating a following, BUT if you aren’t doing it because you love it and are only interested in the money or brand deals, you will lose interest because those things take time and patience to achieve. Also, it shows in your videos and your subscribers can tell :)
Be consistent! This is a big one that everyone always says but it is SO IMPORTANT! If you upload consistently, your subscribers will always know when to expect your videos and they look forward to them! Also, if you are uploading frequently there are a lot more chances of one of your videos blowing up and growing your channel!
Be yourself! I take lots of inspiration from other YouTubers that I watch- video ideas, editing styles, etc. but I would recommend to always put your own spin on things and be true to yourself and what content you want to produce! If your channel looks exactly like someone else’s, a new subscriber would be less likely to subscribe to you than if your channel was unique and completely your own!
What's your favorite video on your channel?
My favorite video on my channel is probably any haul I have with Princess Polly! Princess Polly is a brand that I have been obsessed with for so long, and when they reached out to me to work on a video I freaked out! Haul videos with Princess Polly are so much fun to film. I still can’t believe that they are a brand that I regularly get to work with- it is still so surreal and I am incredibly grateful to my subscribers for giving me that platform to work with some of my favorite brands! I also love making vlogs because I get to look back on those memories :)
Finally, what is your experience with hate (in real life and in comments) and do you have any advice on how to deal with it?
I am fortunate enough to not have experienced much hate in real life. I feel like
most people wouldn’t say anything to my face, but I do experience some hate comments on my videos. Most of my comments are overwhelmingly positive and I am so grateful to my subscribers who take the time to comment on my videos (I respond to every comment). For the negative comments I mostly just ignore them, unless it is something that I can clarify or address- then I will respond back. When dealing with hate, I would always be nice and try to be the bigger person, or just ignore it and not let it get to you!
