How Kelly Margot Grew Her YouTube Channel - The Creator Confidential

Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Kelly, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!

At the age of 10, Kelly Margot started her channel “Beautybykell11”. Today, under the channel name “Kelly Margot” she has almost 100,000 subscribers and over 6.6 million views. This is the story of how she steadily grew her small account into a successful channel that has worked with companies like Princess Polly, SquareSpace, HelloFresh, and Skill Share.

"Be yourself, work hard, and be consistent!"

What inspired you to create your channel?

I knew I wanted to start making videos back in 2014 when Bethany Mota was the queen of YouTube. I wanted to inspire people the same way Bethany did. I would always talk to my mirror, like I was filming a makeup tutorial.

Why did your channel name change from Beautybykell11 to Kelly Margot?

When I started attending high school, I kind of realized how immature it sounded if we're being honest. Maybe that's just me being hard on myself. I also don't really post that many beauty videos, so it didn't seem right to have my username be so specific. I started out doing makeup videos, which then turned into vlogs and fashion. I didn't really like the pressure to only do one genre of videos!

Do you think your family or background/where you grew up influenced your content? Can you talk about how your parents affected your YouTube channel?

Thankfully, my family and friends have always supported me. I always like to feature them in videos occasionally too! I live in a suburban area, so it was something my town wasn't used to. My peers adjusted quickly though; they were pretty accepting!

How long does it take to edit one of your videos?

I'd say usually anywhere from 1-3 hours, depending on the video! So definitely not too bad.

Top 3 tips you would give to small YouTubers trying to start a successful YouTube channel?

Be yourself, work hard, and be consistent!

Were you ever, at any point, frustrated with your channel growth? If you were, how did you get past that?

I'm a perfectionist, so I don't feel satisfied all the time with my channel. There are definitely periods of slow and quick growth. Honestly, I just give it time and continue what I'm doing. I know that after periods of slow growth, it'll go back to normal eventually.

How do you find new opportunities with brands? What is one of the best opportunities you've gotten from your YouTube channel?

In the beginning, I would reach out to companies I liked, but now they usually approach me. I get probably 25 emails from companies, weekly. I will usually only choose brands that I actually know, or have heard of. I rarely do brand deals for videos - I've probably done 4 in the past year honestly. I like to work with brands I'm interested in! For example, I've worked with brands like Princess Polly, SquareSpace, HelloFresh, Skill Share, and more!

Although it wasn't a brand deal, the coolest thing YouTube has given me was being able to go to the "Love, Simon" screening in NYC. I got to watch the movie before it came out with the cast. It was by far the coolest thing I've ever done. I was also able to go to a YouTube Space concert, where I met and saw Ruel live! It was so crazy because I am such a big fan, and it happened because of YouTube.

What is your experience with hate and how do you deal with it?

I've never actually gotten bullied, which I am very thankful for! But, I definitely get the occasional rude remarks from people at school that I've gotten used to over time. I've even lost a couple friends as well. It's made me learn to appreciate the people that accept me through it all. I've also grown thick skin and the ability to not let comments (in person or on YouTube) get to me.

What are your plans for the future of your channel?

I definitely plan on going to college in the fall of 2021, but will continue to do YouTube! I'm excited for all the get ready with me's and college vlogs. I think merch might be coming soon as well! I've made 2 t-shirts with a company in the past, but they were both limited edition. I'm looking for something more permanent! I also want to major in fashion merchandising in college, which has to do with my YouTube videos a little bit, so I'm excited to see how those two things will tie together.
