Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where successful and famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. If you’re a small YouTuber looking to grow your channel or just get inspired, you’re in the right place! Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lauren, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!
Lauren started her YouTube channel “honeymilks” just under 2 years ago in 2018. She quickly grew her channel to over 66,000 subscribers and 2.2 million views. In addition, her aesthetic journaling and penpalling videos are not restricted just to YouTube. She also posts frequently on her Instagram, which has over 24,000 followers! This is her success story.
What inspired you to create your channel? When did you first start?
I started my channel in the summer of 2018, but didn’t post a video until later that year. I made a journaling Instagram account at the start of 2018, and a lot of the creators I followed had a YouTube channel as well so I thought it would be fun to start my own! And I’m so glad I did :)
Were there any creators back when you started that inspired you?
Definitely! I would say my biggest inspiration when I began my channel was AmandaRachLee, and she still inspires me today. Since then, I’ve made a lot of friends in the community and they never fail to inspire me if I’m feeling unmotivated.
Do you think your family or background/where you grew up influenced your content? Can you talk about how your parents affected your YouTube channel?
I wouldn’t say my background has had much of a role in influencing my content. My family are all supportive of my channel so I definitely have the freedom to create videos that I enjoy, which I am very grateful for!
Since you post pretty frequently both on Instagram and YouTube, which platform do you prefer for your content?
I love both platforms! YouTube allows me to be more creative with my content, but I think I prefer Instagram because it’s much easier to interact with my followers & friends.
Top 3 tips you would give to small YouTubers trying to start a successful YouTube channel?
My tips:
Find your own style + niche. If there isn’t a niche you think you fit into, make your own!
Create content that you are passionate about and truly enjoy.
Be flexible! Change up your style if you find something else suits you better.
How do you balance school/life with your channel? Do you have any advice?
School has always taken priority over my channel, so if I have exams I will take time away from creating videos. This was a pretty easy decision for me, since I don’t see myself doing YouTube as a full-time job in the future. I’ve just finished my last year of school, so it was very important that I got the grades required for university, and I didn’t want YouTube to get in the way of that.
What's your favorite video on your channel? Why?
I think my ‘cozy journaling ft. Animal Crossing” video is my favourite! I used a piano cover of the Animal Crossing: Wild World soundtrack as background music which I think added to the whole “cozy” vibe of the video. I spent my childhood playing Animal Crossing so I loved the nostalgic feel of the music.
What motivates you to continue making videos?
If I have lost motivation, I won’t force myself to create. My channel is a hobby that I do for pleasure so forcing myself to make videos when I’m uninspired will feel like a chore, and I usually won’t end up liking the final product!
I also have a list of video ideas that I’m excited to make which I update regularly, and this helps me find inspiration if I’m feeling unmotivated.
How long do you take to edit one of your videos?
It depends on each video! I usually leave a few days before I upload where I spend a few hours editing each afternoon. I also add a lot of hand-drawn gifs which take a bit longer to make than normal text. Generally, I would say I spend anywhere from 3-6 hours on each video.
How do you find new opportunities with brands? Do you reach out to them or do they just email you? What is one of the best opportunities you've gotten from your YouTube channel?
Brands usually email me! I make sure that the brand would fit with my content before considering their offer. I was able to work with Arteza twice over the past year, which was a great opportunity. I still use their products now!
What's the best comment you've ever received on your YouTube channel?
Oooh there are a lot to choose from :D I’m grateful for everyone who comments on my videos, and every comment is lovely in it’s own way so it’s really difficult to pick just one!!
What is your experience with hate and how do you deal with it?
I don’t get much hate on my videos! The community my channel is part of is a very welcoming & positive one, so the majority of my comments are lovely :) If I do get a negative comment, I just remember that I’m making videos for my own enjoyment and not to please anyone else.
