Hi! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lauryn, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!
Lauryn Doan started posting 10 years ago at the age of 10 but didn't truly start consistently posting videos until a couple years ago. Today, she has over 35,000 subscribers and 1.8 million views. Along the way, she created merch, monetized her channel, and one of her most popular videos earned 423,000 views. This is her story.
What inspired you to create your channel?
I had always watched beauty gurus growing up (the OG's haha). Bethany Mota and Meredith Foster were my ultimate faves. I never knew what I wanted to do, though. My first video ever was a Christmas haul when I was literally 10 years old. (DON'T GO SEARCH IT lol.) Ever since then I've been on and off with uploading. I could say that I've been a YouTuber for 10 years, but that's not super accurate. I think the time that I completely started to create real content was when I was inspired by the lifestyle vlogger style from Maggie and Emma Macdonald.
Can you talk about how your parents or siblings affected your YouTube channel?
My parents and siblings are all super supportive of my channel! I never felt like I really needed to hide it from them. My 3 older siblings and I are all SUPER close so it's never been something I was afraid to share! Both of my sisters have also been YouTubers at one point! One of them stopped posting content, but my sister Brittany Lien is a YouTuber as well and has almost 80k subscribers! Woo! We literally can talk about Youtube all day long together. It's so great that she understands 100% of what I go through and we can relate and help each other in every way.
Would you be comfortable with sharing how you went through the process of getting monetized/when you started making money?
Yeah! I am totally transparent with this topic because I think a lot of YouTubers keep it rather lowkey and don't want to talk about it that much. But I know how many people are curious about it and would love to share more on it. It took me forever to get monetized as it does a lot of people! The requirements used to be way lower than what they are now... I think you had to have like 1000 followers and 400 hours watch time or something? But I'm pretty sure it's a lot higher now as more and more people started to do Youtube! I started making money I believe around 2k subscribers, but I didn't get paid monthly at that point. I would get paid about every 3-4 months. I have a video more in depth on it on my channel, if you want to know more!
Top 3 tips you would give to small YouTubers trying to start a successful YouTube channel?
USE A CALL TO ACTION. Ever since I started TELLING my subscribers to like, comment, and subscribe, and mean it when I say it, I started to see FAST growth!
Consistency obviously is key. If you upload only 1 time a week, people only have 1 time out of the week to find you. However, if you upload, 3 days a week, people have such a better chance of finding your channel!
Lastly, be authentic. DON'T COPY OTHER YOUTUBERS. It's been really apparent for me lately. No one is going to want to watch you if your content is exactly like a YouTuber that has a slightly bigger following than you. That's just the way it goes.
How do you find new opportunities with brands? Do you email them or do they email you? What is one of the best opportunities you've gotten from your YouTube channel?
I am a part of a couple influencer programs that help you link with brands! (One of them is called AspireIQ. I found out about it through my friend Kathryn who has used it to link with brands for a while now. It’s a super cool process!) Also, I always have my business email in my description, so brands can find me through my email in my descriptions! It can go either way. If I really want to work with a brand, I will reach out to them first! Most brands will reach out to me first though.
DEFINITELY so proud of my Curology sponsorship! Everything I say about that company (and all sponsorships on my social media accounts) is 100% honest. I truly love Curology and it was so cool that I was able to work with them! Princess Polly is also amazing too. So many more SUPER COOL ones coming soon too!
I know that you made some merch! Can you describe the process of creating it?
Absolutely! Okay so basically, most creators use Procreate to do their hand drawn designs. However, I made the rainbow design BEFORE I had Procreate or a stylus to draw on my phone with! I hand drew it on a piece of paper, transferred a picture of that design on the paper onto a random app that I had, colored over it, traced it, made the background transparent, and there you go. SUCH a difficult process, way harder than it would've been if I used Procreate. But now I have it, and it's SO much easier! I partnered with the Youtube merch company, Teespring, on it, so it is a super easy process to set up a shop and sell through there! I also donated half of the profit that I made within the first few days to a COVID-19 fund. We donated over $300 :) Amazing!
How long does it take to edit one of your videos?
It honestly just depends on what it is! Vlogs take a LOT longer than sit down videos, considering a lot more creative content goes into editing vlogs than editing a sit down video such as a grocery haul or something. I've gotten pretty fast at it to be honest, so I can fully edit a video in about 2 hours now.
