Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous and successful YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Teagan, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!
Teagan Litten started posting videos on her channel in 7th grade, and started out like anyone else would: with 0 subscribers and 0 views. During her school breaks and lunch, she would bring her laptop with her to work on editing. She persisted through bullies playing her videos in school. Eventually, all this hard work paid off. She now has over 42,000 subscribers and 4.3 million views. She has met countless YouTube friends, met people from around the world, and goes on content trips! In this blog post, she shares her tips to grow your small channel, how she met her YouTube friends, and her favorite brand opportunity so far.
“It's your life, don't let other people tell you how to live it.”
What inspired you to create your channel? When did you start?
I started posting YouTube videos when I was in 7th grade, but always used to film myself or talk to a fake camera when I was younger. I almost feel like I did not have a specific inspiration - or at least can't think of one that would have sparked my interest in YouTube. I just always loved talking to a camera. Then, my dad got me a camera one year, and that was a done deal for me. I was also never any good at sports, which created me having a lot more free time than needed. I loved going out and filming videos after school or planning what my future with YouTube would look like.
Do you think your family or background/where you grew up influenced your content? In a positive or negative way? Can you talk about how your parents or siblings affected your YouTube channel?
I 100% believe that my family is where I got my passion for social media. Definitely in a very positive way. My dad is a programmer so he has always been super helpful, he taught me how to edit and monetize my channel. My dad actually has multiple YouTube channels (@nicklitten) he consistently posts on, along with my older brother who used to make vlog type videos (@nathanlitten), although he had to stop when he joined Coast Guard. My mum has always been my biggest supporter. Her and my step dad always made sure I could go on trips to visit my YouTube friends, and any trips revolving around modelling. I will forever be so grateful that my passion has been made possible for me mostly because of my family, and of course my subscribers.
Top 3 tips you would give to small YouTubers trying to start a successful YouTube channel?
Consistency. I think posting quality content as much as possible is very important. It can be frustrating when putting out multiple videos and they aren't receiving the kind of views that were wanted. But on the other hand, you never know which video could blow up or attract a lot of new subscribers. Post lots of content to prove to your followers that you are committed.
Be humble. No one wants to watch someone's videos if they come off as cocky or not grateful. ALWAYS remind yourself of what you have and what you are grateful for. Help others out throughout your YouTube journey and never forget where you started from.
Persistence. While starting out on Youtube, it's fairly easy to feel defeated or want to quit. You have to keep going and keep grinding on your content. If it was really easy, everyone would be doing it and everyone would be famous. If you get any hate, you can't let that be the reason you stop before you even really get started. Everything takes time and I honestly believe everything happens for a reason. If you truly love making content, then things will work in your favor if you put in the time and effort.
I know you have a lot of YouTuber friends that you've gone on trips with or met, so: How did you connect with them in the first place?
I LOVE my YouTube friends and meeting other people with the same passion as me. I’ve met all my YouTube friends pretty much through Instagram DM or through other people. I used to make "internet friends" before I even started making videos, and then around a year ago, I flew to Atlanta to meet a group of girls which we soon referred to ourselves as the "gorly girl gang". We all loved making content, and that trip really inspired me to keep on my YouTube grind. I love every single one of those girls and can't wait to see them kill it more on their platforms.
I recently also flew to Miami with Amanda Pulitano, Annabelle Ham, Maya Summers and even got a lip tattoo with Emma Topp HAHA. I have been best friends with Annabelle and Maya since our earlier YouTube days and I always know I could trust them with my life. It has been a crazy ride, I met my friends strictly through a screen and knew nothing about them. Now they are the closest people to my heart and I feel like they know me better than anyone.
How do you find opportunities with brands? Also, this doesn't necessarily have to be about brands but: What is one of the best opportunities you've been given because of your channel?
I usually tend to only work with brands I really like or think that they have a positive message. A big part of YouTube is reaching out to brands. Some may answer, some may not but at the end of the day it doesn't hurt to try. I think one of the best experiences I was lucky enough to get from a brand was the Domio trip to Miami with a bunch of my friends. This was such a dope opportunity and I will forever be grateful for the life long memories I got from that trip. Content trips are easily my favorite because I feel like it's just an assigned break where you get to fully indulge in your passion. Ever since that specific trip, I know I am more certain than ever that I would continue travelling and creating content for as long as I'm able to. It makes me so happy.
How do you balance school with YouTube? Do you have any time management tips?
Balancing school with YouTube can be challenging at times, but it's all about sacrifices. Sometimes I can't go out on the weekend because I know I have content I need to get done. Throughout high school, I actually brought my own laptop to school rather than using the school provided ones, and I would edit for hours at school. I would be able to get entire videos edited just using my free time during class or lunch breaks. Time management is something that should become a positive habit in your everyday life. I used a planner to keep track of video ideas or dates that I needed to get stuff done for. Having it all written out in front of me was a huge lifesaver and immediately made me less stressed out.
Finally, what is your experience with hate (in real life and in comments) and do you have any advice on how to deal with it?
Learning how to deal with hate has been a necessary part of growing and advancing throughout my life. Growing up having a Youtube channel, I was extremely bullied for having an English accent. There were girls in my high school who would mimic my voice or play my videos during class and make fun of them. Although this was very difficult to experience at the time, now I am way more confident in myself and I never let hate get to me like I used to. There are always going to be people who get satisfaction from bringing other people down, what's important is that you don't allow them to bring you down, and instead use it as motivation. Know that your successes may make others uncomfortable, especially when you’re coming from a small town or being surrounded by small minded people. It's your life, don't let other people tell you how to live it.
