YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel - EvieEllen

Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Today’s post is something special and the first of a series called “YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel”. In this series, small YouTube channels share their successes and struggles, how they got their first subscribers, why they started, and more! If you want to be featured, you can send me an email (thecreatorconfidential@gmail.com) or DM me on Instagram (@thecreatorconfidential). Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Evie, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!

Introduce yourself!

I am Evie, 17 years old (18 in December which feels so weird as I still very much feel 12) and my YouTube channel is called EvieEllen, which I've been doing since 2014 - so around 6 years now! I've had many previous channels in the past from the age of around 8, using Littlest Pet Shops, and playing Animal Jam, since I wasn't allowed to show my face in videos up until I made my current channel :)

I have been watching Youtubers for as long as I can remember, like Zoella, Bethany Mota and all those iconic people who definitely inspired the creation of my channel. The content I upload definitely tends to vary, but I would classify my content as very lifestyle based, real content as to what I get up to. But, I do tend to branch out and make videos to help people (e.g, I recently did a video on how to make easy money as a teenager!) Making videos is a passion of mine and I'm also lucky enough to have my older sister, who is into photography, to help with filming (she's also a lifesaver when it comes to making good thumbnails!)

How did you, personally, become more integrated with and interact more with the YouTube community/fellow YouTubers?

Making friends and connecting with other creators, I believe, is such an important part of YouTube. I've made friends with influencers like me through group chats, other people’s channels, and through their videos! If I like a smaller YouTuber's content, I will let them know by leaving some love on their videos, and this definitely has helped me to make friends.

Have any funny stories that might've occurred during filming or editing?

The amount of times I've started filming videos, and literally cannot pronounce the simplest word, or can't word a sentence for the life of me, often ends up giving me a laugh while filming when I then have to refilm it 10 times. One funny memory whilst filming was when I was doing a “Get Ready With Me” with my best friend Bethany - a wasp decided to fly through the window, and our reactions made us have quite a laughing fit as we both screamed at the same time (we love being dramatic queens).

Have you gotten monetized yet? If so, can you go through the process of monetization for you?

As for monetisation, I have been monetised for around a year now! I could have started monetising my videos a few years ago, but decided against it, as I wanted to do some research about it before I set it up! When I did decide to make a Google Adsense account to start making some money through my videos, there was a process in which they had to I guess 'look over' your channel and make sure you are eligible to be monetised. This took a little while, but after that it was all set up! You have to reach a certain threshold before you are able to be paid each time, and you can see how much you're making easily through YouTube Studio - making money has been a plus as I can earn some money from doing something I love!

What's your experience with tags and SEO? Which tags do you use to help your videos be more popular? Any advice for people who have no idea how to use tags?

Although I was in some way aware of the importance of tags and SEO previously, and did try to make sure to add tags to my videos in the past, I've recently done a lot more research on it and paid a lot more attention to these areas of YouTube, to ensure that my content can get out there and reach new people! I try to use tags that are RELEVANT to the video itself, are simple, but easily searchable.

Do you have any apps that greatly helped your filming/editing process/overall YouTube experience?

I tend to do most of the editing process for videos on my computer, and for editing for the past few years I have been using Sony Vegas, which I find simple to use and does all I need it to do (apart from it crashing sometimes, but I'll blame that on my outdated laptop haha). I used to use Pic Monkey for thumbnails a year or so ago, however I have begun to use Photoshop to create the exact thumbnail I like (my sister is a lot better at using it than I am so she usually helps me with the thumbnails). I also really recommend TubeBuddy which helps a lot with choosing ranking titles, searchable tags and ultimately allowing your channel to reach more people and helps you to manipulate the algorithm.

What is your experience with hate because of your channel, either in real life or online? (How do you deal with this?)

Hate is inevitably a part of creating content online for a lot of people. I've been lucky enough to have complete support around me (that I know of, but to be fair the opinions of those close to me matter the most and they're all positive, so that’s great). As for online hate, I have received some in the past - whether it's commenting on my appearance, the way I speak, or my content, I don't really find myself affected much by the negativity, because I'm proud of the platform I've created and all my achievements. I have actually made a reacting to hate comments video recently because joking with it helps to not take it too seriously (and also hopefully makes some fun content out of it too). I try to see everything as a chance for growth rather than hindrance.

What are your hopes for the future of your channel? What will your channel look like 2-10 years from now?

I have no idea what's in store for the future regarding my YouTube. Over the past few months, I've really realised how much I love making content and how much I'd love for my channel to blossom into something even greater in the future. Impacting people in a positive way and making content that can be enjoyed is my main priority and I'd love to reach more people with what I do and develop my channel further. Over the next two years, I would absolutely love to hit 20,000 (or possibly more!) - this would be so incredible.

Finally, why should people subscribe to your channel (why is it unique)?

Now, although I'm just a random British 17 year old with a YouTube channel out of the millions on the platform, I'd like to think my content is enjoyable and in some cases helpful! I like to be 100% real and genuine, love to interact with my audience on a personal level, and make my social media platforms a happy and carefree community :) I've been posting basically every week for 6 years (the most dedicated I've ever been to anything haha) and making content is something that I absolutely love doing. I really hope this reflects through in my videos. I never even thought I would reach 10 subscribers, let alone 13,000 - and I'm so grateful for the support I receive everyday. I appreciate every single comment, like and view, and try my hardest to put out the best content possible, so please do check my channel out if you want to find some new creators to watch! Thank you so much <3
