Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Today’s post is something special and the first of a series called “YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel”. In this series, small YouTube channels share their successes and struggles, how they got their first subscribers, why they started, and more! If you want to be featured, you can send me an email (thecreatorconfidential@gmail.com) or DM me on Instagram (@thecreatorconfidential). Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jules, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!
Introduce yourself!
Hey! Thank you so much for having me on the Creator Confidential :) My name is Jules and I am a lifestyle content creator. On my YouTube channel I make super fun and happy lifestyle content. My videos are packed full of fun little pink doodles and edits. I started my channel about six months ago but I started posting consistently when quarantine began, so about two months ago. I absolutely LOVE to learn new things so I decided to give YouTube a try and I fell in love with it!
How did you, personally, become more integrated with and interact more with the YouTube community/fellow YouTubers? Share your experience!
The main way that I have made connections in the YouTube world was from Instagram group chats! I also have made my closest YouTube friends by doing collabs with them. If I find a smaller channel, like me, and I like their content and personality, I will most likely reach out to them and get to know them. I am beyond lucky to have met the people that I have met on YouTube. I have made so many super close friends and without YouTube, I never would have met them!
How did you get your first few subscribers?
I got my first few subscribers from my friends and family. I am very open about my YouTube channel with my school so a lot of my classmates support me! I think finding your first few subscribers is the same for everyone, by word of mouth from family and friends.
Have any funny stories that might've occurred during filming or editing? :)
There have been COUNTLESS times where I have totally mispronounced words or gotten really tongue tied. There was another time where my sister and I were filming the “Swapping Lives With My Sister for 24 Hours” video and I hadn't seen any of her footage until I started editing it. There was one clip that she took where she was having a mega dance party in my room at around midnight, I was totally not expecting that so it was a really great surprise haha!!
What's your experience with tags and SEO? Which tags do you use to help your videos be more popular? Any advice for people who have no idea how to use tags?
As a small youtuber, if you can figure out how to properly use tags and SEO then you will surely grow. It is so hard to grow as a small youtuber and I think if you can get the algorithm to favor your videos, you will succeed. I learned the SEO basics from Cathrin Manning, her videos are so helpful when you are starting out. Tags have really helped some of my best videos get exposed to new potential subscribers.
Do you have any apps that greatly helped your filming/editing process/overall YouTube experience?
My all time favorite apps to use for YouTube are Thematic, Canva, and Phonto. I use Phonto and Canva for my thumbnails. They have really helped improve the quality of my thumbnails. I also have a very hard time finding good, non-copyrighted music for my videos and Thematic has helped me so much.
Have you encountered any types of bullying at school/hate online because of your channel? (If you have, how do you deal with this?)
It is actually quite the opposite! Like I mentioned earlier, I am very open with my school when it comes to YouTube and they have been so supportive. I have luckily not gotten any negative feedback from my school. I would say that about half of my subscribers are from my school. Every once in a while I will receive very nice texts from my classmates about my channel and videos. It is safe to say that my channel wouldn't be where it is now without them :)
What are your hopes for the future of your channel? What will your channel look like 2-10 years from now?
Long term, my dream job is to become a dermatologist so I hope to be able to continue making content throughout college and medical school. I hope to be able to use that platform to inform people all about skincare. Short term, I hope to grow my channel as much as possible and really maintain a solid following of my videos.
Finally, why should people subscribe to your channel (why is it unique)?
I absolutely LOVE every part of the process of making videos. My videos are super fun and happy so if you like that type of content then you should definitely subscribe to my channel. I have a very unique and fun editing style that I think a lot of people enjoy. Thanks so much for having me :)) I’ll see you all at a different part of the internet!
