YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel - Kieran Manson

Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Today’s post is something special and the first of a series called “YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel”. In this series, small YouTube channels share their successes and struggles, how they got their first subscribers, why they started, and more! If you want to be featured, you can send me an email (thecreatorconfidential@gmail.com) or DM me on Instagram (@thecreatorconfidential). Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Kieran, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!

Before we start, here’s a little message from Kieran: “support the black lives matter, yemen crisis, free palestine movement and much more through this link: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/

Introduce yourself!

Hey <3 My name is Kieran and I make videos about whatever I really want to in the moment. I seriously will be in the shower and think of a video idea and make it within a couple hours haha. I started my YouTube channel at the beginning of 2018, so I've been on here for just over 2 years now, which is insane. I started because I wanted to be able to make videos to look back on when I’m like 60, and see how I looked and acted and was feeling in a certain video. And now, I’ve made over 100+ videos (most are privated because they are so embarrassing and anyone who would have to see them I would feel bad for). Being able to look back on these when I'm older is something really important and special to me. I watch a bunch of YouTubers every day but the ones that stick out the most to me would be Emma Chamberlain, Weston and Kalynn Koury, Kennedy Walsh, and so so SO many more!

I watched one of Amanda Rose's YouTube videos where she had different YouTuber friends vlog their day and saw your part in that video! How did you get to know YouTuber friends like her and become more integrated with the YouTube community in the first place?

Yeah, it was so fun being in Amanda’s video! Sometimes other creators will message you on Instagram asking you a simple question on editing or something, and friendships really just sprout from there! If you want to be friends with someone don't be afraid to reach out, I personally love getting DM’s from people who watch my videos, it warms my heart and makes me remember why I really do this.

How did you get your first few subscribers?

To be honest I don’t really know how I got my first few subscribers, I just made a couple of videos and I think like 15 people subscribed, which I was happy with. And then, a couple of months later I posted a link to my channel on my Instagram story. People from my school saw it which was ... scary and I lowkey wanted to crawl up into a ball until nobody cared that I made videos...

Have any funny stories that might've occurred during filming or editing?

In pretty much all of my vlogs which involves me being in the car at some point, a car will park next to me and look at my camera. I get so embarrassed at what the other people are thinking like… why is this kid recording himself?? Yeah, I get in situations like that a lot lol.

What's your experience with tags and SEO? Which tags do you use to help your videos be more popular? Any advice for people who have no idea how to use tags?

I have more experience with tags/keywords than SEO although I’m super interested in both of them. Advice for tags would probably be to have them relate to the video, your channel and you in general. For example, in my newest video about staying sane after quarantine I put tags like 'post quarantine, how to stay sane after quarantine, quarantine vlog, post quarantine vlog' etc etc, usually just any I can think of.

Do you have any apps that greatly helped your filming/editing process/overall YouTube experience?

Tubebuddy is a super useful extension to use if you are a smaller creator, it shows you what tags and keywords are relevant to your video and how they will perform. I suggest using this if you're struggling with growing!!

What are your hopes for the future of your channel? What will your channel look like 2-10 years from now?

I hope to really see my channel become successful as I work superrrr hard on it :) I am so grateful for everyone who is supporting me already, however, and wouldn't trade those baes for the world <333333

Have you encountered any types of bullying at school because of your channel?

I never really did experience much hate online tbh, people would say things to me at school but I had more self respect and would never stoop low enough to interact with them. Period.

Finally, why should people subscribe to your channel?

I don’t wanna ask people to subscribe because...they don't have to, y'know? But if anyone ever needs a safe place, a laugh or even just somewhere to feel wanted, anyone and everyone is accepted and loved over on my channel no matter what! Everyone there is my best friend. So subscribe if you wanna be my best friend lol.
