YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel - Kyla Michelle

Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Today’s post is something special and the first of a series called “YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel”. In this series, small YouTube channels share their successes and struggles, how they got their first subscribers, why they started, and more! If you want to be featured, you can send me an email (thecreatorconfidential@gmail.com) or DM me on Instagram (@thecreatorconfidential). Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Kyla, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!

Introduce yourself!

My name is Kyla Michelle on YouTube, I just finished my junior year of highschool (that makes me a senior now), and I make lifestyle and beauty videos. I have always loved video making since SevenSuperGirls was a thing and I used to make my own skits but never posted them. But, I actually started youtube when I was 10 years old making videostar music videos. But then I deleted that channel and stopped when I was around 13 years old. I made a new channel on May 2, 2018 and started taking it more seriously last June. YouTubers that inspire me are: Emma Johansson, Olivia Somersille, Hannah Elise, Nicole Rafiee, Hannah Meloche, Sadie Aldis, Emily Paulichi, Ava Jules, Haley Pham, Ellie Thumann, and bestdressed.

How did you, personally, become more integrated with and interact more with the YouTube community/fellow YouTubers?

I became more into the community of YouTubers when I started to join group chats around March of 2020. I have made some great friends that inspire me. One thing I would NOT recommend is going on people's posts and just saying "sub for sub". It truly is annoying and that's not a good way to make friends. I DMed people and was like "hey! i am just looking for some youtube friends to grow together and was wondering if maybe you wanna be in a group chat with other youtubers and not just a sub for sub things but to truly be friends"... You gotta be genuine about it & truly mean it. Never be afraid to reach out.

How did you get your first few subscribers?

I got my first few subscribers from my friends. I told them about my channel, and my friends have always been so supportive of me. But other than that, just posting on Instagram and truly not caring about what others say and posting consistently. That's such a big piece of advice I have! Don't care what people at your school may think; you may not even see them ever again after school, and they don't know the true you. So just keep going and post consistently, YouTube loves that and that's how you gain subscribers.

What inspires you to keep making videos?

Honestly, seeing my YouTube friends grow, my passion for video making, gaining memories, and the support from my friends keeps me going. It's something I've always loved and I want to keep that going. I just want to make people smile and at least give someone a couple minutes of joy.

What’s the best and worst thing about YouTube?

The best thing about being a YouTuber is you can make so many memories and have a creative outlet. The worst thing (for me) is that my voice became so annoying to me. I hate to hear it sometimes.

What types of struggles do you go through as a small YouTuber? Do you have any advice for other small channels on how to resolve these issues?

A struggle I have as a smaller YouTuber is comparison. I would compare my channel to other YouTubers, and it kills your motivation. I try not to do this and if any other YouTuber is going through this I would just calm down and think "that is not me, my time will come later, we are two different humans and I just have to be patient and realize that i don't do this to be "famous" but just do it for myself and make others happy". Another struggle of mine is when you hit a plateau in your channel. For example, through the months of March to May I gained over 500 subscribers. But now I am not growing as much, and it's kinda at a stand-still. I'm just trying to stay consistent and realize that every channel goes through this!

Do you have any special apps that you discovered that really helped your editing or filming?

I LOVE this question. When I used to edit my videos on my brother's iPad I used VLLO and I ended up buying the $10 pack for the whole app. GAMECHANGER. I now use iMovie on my laptop, but VLLO is the best app I have ever used. I highly recommend it. Apps for thumbnails are Picsart, VSCO, and Phonto. I love those apps so so much.

What are your hopes for the future of your channel? What will your channel look like 2-10 years from now?

My hopes for the future of my channel is that I will incorporate more Christian videos (because I am one and I want to use my platform for it), and maybe at the end of the year hit 1,000 subscribers. What I hope my channel will look like in the next 2-10 years is me doing college vlogs, getting married, travelling, and documenting the start of my own business one day.

Last but not least, why should people subscribe to your channel?

I think that people should subscribe to my channel because I really do put my heart into it, it's been one of my top priorities and I'm always trying new things and keeping everything fun and lighthearted. I just want to make people happy. I always respond to my comments, and I just want to be friends with people & make connections. I have never thought of my subscribers as just that, I realize that they are ACTUAL people and I really do care for all of them.

I just wanna give some tips out for anybody with a YouTube channel that you may or may not know:

1. Always do the video you wanna do, not just the 'popular' ones.

2. USE TAGS!! They help so much! Write a description in the description of your video with keywords.

3. At first, you may not be yourself on camera, but it comes with time.

4. And lastly, if you truly wanna grow.. treat your YouTube like it is you own business as well. What I mean by this is, YES have fun and do it because you ENJOY to do it, but also post consistently and have yourself a little schedule and a notebook just for YouTube. Make it work for you.
