Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Today’s post is something special and the first of a series called “YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel”. In this series, small YouTube channels share their successes and struggles, how they got their first subscribers, why they started, and more! If you want to be featured, you can send me an email (thecreatorconfidential@gmail.com) or DM me on Instagram (@thecreatorconfidential). Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lacey, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!
Introduce yourself!
My content ranges from a variety of lifestyle, fashion, & productivity. It's funny hearing this question, because if I was asked this question two years ago I don't think I'd be able to answer it. When I first started my channel one of my biggest struggles was finding a "niche", or something that speaks to me! I first started my channel in early June 2018. A few of my biggest influences in the YouTube community have been Lauryn Doan, Vereena Sayeed, along with Julia K Crist! I recently discovered Lauryn’s channel just this year and watching her grow has inspired me to stay consistent and keep creating new content that speaks to me. I discovered Vereena’s channel right around the time I started my own, and seeing how raw and authentic she is with her fans is enough to inspire just about anyone.
How did you, personally, become more integrated with and interact more with the YouTube community/fellow YouTubers?
I first started interacting with those that I look up to, commenting on their recent posts via Instagram, being early to a new video that they post, interacting with polls on their Instagram. I’ve found that by doing so it doesn’t only show them your support but also helps with others possibly discovering your content and maybe being inspired by you!
Do you remember how you got your first few subscribers?
When I first started my channel I was clueless on how to gain and how to reach any kind of audience. However, my first few subscribers were from Instagram and close friends sharing my channel on their platforms!
Have any funny stories that might've occurred during filming or editing?
I wouldn’t say I have any funny stories, but the classic FaceTime call while in the middle of filming or editing is enough to get a laugh or two out of the situation!
What's your experience with tags and SEO? Which tags do you use to help your videos be more popular? Any advice for people who have no idea how to use tags?
My experience with SEO & using tags has been extremely beneficial! The tags I use and how I use them varies. I never use the same tags because not every video is the same. My first tag is always my target keyword, whether I’m uploading a “GRWM” video or a “Skincare Routine”. I always start with the keyword of whatever category my video falls under. My advice for those that are new to tags or don’t know how to use them is to use tags that correspond to your video and what it’s about. Think of the tags as hashtags on Instagram, but instead for YouTube. Two different platforms but very similar concepts!
What is your experience with hate because of your channel, either in real life or online? (How do you deal with this?)
I’ve never received direct hate over my channel. However, I have never paid much attention to negativity in the first place. I figure if someone has something negative to say, that individual is either going through something in their personal life or just unhappy with themself.
Do you have any apps that greatly helped your filming/editing process/overall YouTube experience?
There are a few apps that have helped me tremendously with editing. One of them, believe it or not, is iMovie! I edit ALL of my videos on iMovie and have been doing so since the very beginning. Finding non-copyrighted music & music that flows with my content was once one of the biggest struggles I had when editing my videos. I first started out using YouTube’s Royalty-Free Music option, but found out that there wasn’t much of a variety to choose from, and the music choices weren’t my style. I then discovered Thematic, which is a site that connects YouTube creators with music for your videos with NO COST!
What are your hopes for the future of your channel? What will your channel look like 2-10 years from now?
I don’t have many hopes, however, I have goals. A few of those goals are being able to gain an audience that can be inspired by not just my videos, but my work ethic and mentality. Ideally I’d say within 2-10 years my channel will grow and I’ll advance in the content that I already post. There’s always room to grow, and within 2-10 years I only see myself learning more than what I know as of today!
Finally, why should people subscribe to your channel (why is it unique)?
I would like to think of myself as a good role model for younger girls who may be struggling with starting their channel or becoming who they want to be. At a very young age, I told myself I don’t ever want to be like everyone else, and to this day I’ve kept that promise. My channel shows only my authentic self and who I am. I think others could very much learn from that and just showing who you are to the world could and should inspire others to do the same. I think this aspect of my channel makes it unique and has lots to offer!
