Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Today’s post is something special and part of a series called “YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel”. In this series, small YouTube channels share their successes and struggles, how they got their first subscribers, why they started, and more! If you want to be featured, you can send me an email (thecreatorconfidential@gmail.com) or DM me on Instagram (@thecreatorconfidential). Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Maia, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!
Introduce yourself!
Hey! My name on YouTube is Maia Rose, but my full name is Maia Rose Osbourne. I create lifestyle videos; however, I am thinking about branching out in the future. I started YouTube at the start of the coronavirus lockdown, which is about March, I think. When I posted my first ever video, it did quite well, and I got about 250 views in the first week or so. But, when I posted my second video, I hated it, but I felt like I needed to post more to grow my channel. The video ended up with like 40 views, which was so drastically less than my first video, I deleted it and stopped posting all together. Then around a month ago I decided to restart, and it's been going well, and I have been enjoying every second of it! My favorite YouTuber currently has to be Annie Long. It's funny cause when I searched her up on famous birthdays, I realised that we were born on July 13th, 2006.
How did you, personally, become more integrated with and interact more with the YouTube community/fellow YouTubers?
Well, I was watching a video about how to gain your first few subs and she said to go onto Instagram and DM other small creators and ask to support each other, so I did and I met some lovely people. One of them added me to a group chat called YouTube angels and they are all teen girls like me trying to grow their channels. We all have very different subscriber counts so it's great!
How did you get your first few subscribers?
Getting those first few subs can be really hard, especially if you don’t feel comfortable telling your friends and family about it just yet. My first 20-30 subscribers were friends and family. I told everyone and their mother about my channel to try to get a small platform to work on, instead of nothing. I would definitely recommend doing this if you are just starting out.
Have any funny stories that might've occurred during filming or editing?
Ha ha, in my recent video I was bleaching my hair, what isn't funny about that!? Only joking, but seriously it was a wild experience! During filming, there was a massive thunderstorm outside, and my bedroom and bathroom are on the top floor of the house, so while the bleach was in my hair and I was freaking out, my whole family were in my bedroom looking out the window and chatting. At one point, the bleach was in my hair and my mum and I were in the bathroom putting the tinfoil on, and my little brother, from the next room, started calling for her just to look at the lightning. Like seriously, he has a habit of being needy at the worst times!
What inspires you to keep making videos?
My inspiration is just loving to create videos for my audience. I want to be an actress when I am older, I have already done quite a lot and I am starting a drama school full time (like the brit school in London, but where I live) in September, so I started a YouTube channel to get comfortable in front of the camera and learn how to edit. It definitely worked! Another thing that pushes me to create weekly videos is knowing that to grow my channel it is essential to post.
What do you think is the best and worst thing about YouTube?
Something that I love about doing YouTube is how much you can learn and how many amazing, talented people you meet that have the same interests and hopes for the future as you. The worst thing, in my opinion, is the embarrassment. Personally, when my family and friends that I'm not that close with talk about my channel, I get really embarrassed.
Have you encountered any types of bullying at school because of your channel?
I'm sure that for others, hate and bullying is a massive issue, and I'm sure in the future, hate will be an obstacle for me too, but that is one good thing about being a small creator: you don’t get as much hate as your audience is much smaller. I haven't even gotten a dislike on any of my videos yet! However, I haven't been to school since I started my channel, so I have no idea what it will be like. I am hoping they will be supportive.
What types of struggles do you go through as a small YouTuber? Do you have any advice for other small channels on how to resolve these issues?
Personally, I struggle with technical stuff like editing and channel banners and stuff. I have found that the best solution is to search your problem up on YouTube, that way you are getting answers from people who once had the same problems as you, whilst supporting other YouTubers.
What are your hopes for the future of your channel? What will your channel look like 2-10 years from now?
In the future I would love my channel to grow to the biggest it can be! I want to be able to create a community of lovely, kind people, where we can all help each other out. My dream is to be able to work with brands and other creators. However, I don’t really see this as a full time job for me, it could help in my job as I would like to work in the fashion or acting industry, and I can see YouTube in my future, just not full time.
Finally, why should people subscribe to your channel (why is it unique)?
I think people should subscribe to my channel because I try to be as entertaining as possible. In the discussion page on my channel you guys can tell me any feedback you have or any videos you would like to see me make and I will definitely make them! I also work really hard on my videos and just one subscriber makes the world of difference!
