YouTube From the Perspective of a Small Channel - McKenzie Autumn

Hello! Right now you’re reading “The Creator Confidential”, a blog where famous YouTubers share their stories and tips they have for growing a YouTube channel. Today’s post is something special and the first of a series called “YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel”. In this series, small YouTube channels share their successes and struggles, how they got their first subscribers, why they started, and more! If you want to be featured, you can send me an email (thecreatorconfidential@gmail.com) or DM me on Instagram (@thecreatorconfidential). Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing McKenzie, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!

Introduce yourself!

Hi! I’m McKenzie! I’m almost 20 years old. I started my channel in June of 2020 because quarantine was my time to start my future! I quit my job at a daycare and started making content that I enjoyed and thought others would as well. My biggest inspirations are Annabelle Ham and Emma Topp. I watched Annabelle’s playlist video last year and she was the first YouTuber I got into. Then, I started watching Emma Topp more and she is the nicest human I’ve ever talked to. She's so humble and it’s so inspiring, especially compared to the other YouTubers. I plan on doing Semester At Sea in 2023. My goal in life is to travel the world and vlog it all. After college, I will become a flight attendant which I will also be vlogging that journey as well. Basically, becoming a successful YouTuber and Instagram influencer has been my dream.

How did you, personally, become more integrated with and interact more with the YouTube community/fellow YouTubers?

I haven't really gotten to know many YouTubers. I’ve talked to some like me who just started by sending them a DM, which had been lots of fun. But, I’ve noticed the more well known young YouTubers rarely contact people when you want to talk to them. Emma Topp and Annabelle Ham are the only ones who I’ve actually gotten to have conversations with. They’re regular people and they’re humble about that, and I think that’s so important.

Have any funny stories that might've occurred during filming or editing?

I don’t know if I have any funny stories of editing, but sometimes I realize I have hours of footage that I want to fit into a 20 minute video and that’s difficult LOL! I also love looking back on the footage I've taken, especially when traveling. I’m filming my birthday week vlog in the next month and I can't wait to edit that. I also put together an amazing (if i do say so myself haha) summer 2020 vlog. I really hope everyone watches it, because it’s my pride and joy right now! I’m so proud of the video.

How did you get your first few subscribers?

I got my first few subscribers from the people I know, but you gotta start somewhere! Right now, I’m at almost 500 subscribers which is really cool!!

What's your experience with tags and SEO? Which tags do you use to help your videos be more popular? Any advice for people who have no idea how to use tags?

I have rarely used tags, to be honest. I don't really know what they do so I'm a little ashamed of that hahaha!

Do you have any apps that greatly helped your filming/editing process/overall YouTube experience?

I live by iMovie! That’s all I use!! I also use SoundCloud for music, but that’s my “secret” I guess!

McKenzie's Instagram Post

Have you encountered any types of bullying at school/hate online because of your channel? How do you deal with this?

I didn’t start my channel until after high school mostly because I was scared of what people would think of me. I wasn’t a well known person in high school, but to me I thought I would get made fun of for it. I’m sure it still happens now, but I’ve learned to not care what others think because what matters is if you’re working hard to achieve something you will be proud of.

What are your hopes for the future of your channel? What will your channel look like 2-10 years from now?

Well, in 2 years, I will be almost done with my bachelors degree and getting ready for SAS while traveling a whole bunch, and I know my channel is able to hit 100,000 subscribers! I'm confident in that and I'm excited for it! I’m so excited for life to get back to normal, because Greece vlogs should be coming next summer! In 10 years, I’ll be working as a flight attendant and vlogging my journey with that so I’m really excited to document these experiences with everyone!

Finally, why should people subscribe to your channel (why is it unique)?

I think you should subscribe especially if you love travel videos and vlogs because my channel has a ton of that! I like to be real with everyone and I express/discuss mental health and self love not only on my channel, but also my Instagram! This journey wouldn’t happen without you all and I can’t wait to bring it farther and farther! xo
