Today’s post is something special and the first of a series called “YouTube from the Perspective of a Small Channel”. In this series, small YouTube channels share their successes and struggles, how they got their first subscribers, why they started, and more! If you want to be featured, you can send me an email (thecreatorconfidential@gmail.com) or DM me on Instagram (@thecreatorconfidential). Over the past week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Cameryn, and here is the finished result. Enjoy!

Introduce yourself!

Hi! My name is Cameryn Hodges and I am a college, lifestyle and Disney blogger, YouTuber, podcaster, media influencer, and entrepreneur. I started my YouTube channel in December 2016 during my sophomore year of high school. Some of my favorite YouTubers that inspired me to start a channel have to be Liza Koshy, My Life As Eva, and Brooklyn and Bailey.

If there is anything you should know about me is that I am completely and utterly obsessed with anything and all things Disney! As a current rising sophomore in college, I plan to do the DCP (Disney College Program) a couple of times before I graduate with my bachelor's degree. I am currently studying/majoring in Communications and Business Administration with a minor in Visual Arts. After I graduate with my master's degree. I plan to go to a great school and get my masters in Film and Entertainment Management and work professionally for the Walt Disney Company in any capacity. While in college, I also run my podcast called “Current Talk” with my best friend from college. We talk about anything from college, society, current events, and culture. The podcast is available on Apple Podcast, Spotify, and any other podcast streaming platforms. I also run my blog called “Our Current Society” where I do weekly or monthly blog posts talking about the current world and life updates on my life.

How did you, personally, become more integrated with and interact more with the YouTube community?

I became more integrated with the YouTube community by joining multiple Facebook groups and or Instagram group chats. I also sometimes just use different YouTubers that either have the following or do the same type of content as me to grow my circle of YouTube friends.

How did you get your first few subscribers?

I got my first few 100 subscribers by simply posting about my channel on my Instagram story telling people to subscribe. When I hit 1,000 subscribers, I did a giveaway to give back to my supporters.

Have any funny stories that might've occurred during filming or editing?

One funny story I have while filming or editing my videos has to be when I filmed my first video in public. One of my high school friends and I recorded "Letting Starbucks Baristas Pick My Drink", and when we asked the barista for that request they immediately asked if we were filming for YouTube.

I saw that you made some merch! Can you go through your process of making it? Would you recommend small channels to make merch as well?

I made and launched my first line of merch last November of the first semester of my freshman year of college. I used the website Teespring and it was a very easy process. I definitely and highly recommend all YouTubers, BIG or Small, to MAKE MERCH! It is an awesome way to silently promote your content and express your creativity.

What inspires you to keep making videos?

One thing that definitely and constantly keeps me inspired to make videos is my dreams/ aspirations to work in the film industry as well as start my own entertainment company and be my boss/CEO. Ultimately, at the end of the day, I want to work at my hours and have multiple streams of income.

What do you think is the best and worst thing about YouTube?

The best thing about YouTube is the ability of making content and the business opportunity behind it. The worst thing about YouTube is the hate that can come from people in the comments.

Have you encountered any types of bullying at school because of your channel? If you have, how do you deal with this?

I have encountered a lot of bullying at my high school because of my YouTube channel. I used to be in the band in high school and lots of my bandmates would always bully me about my channel. Because of that I practically took a 2-year break from YouTube because I was too concerned about what my friends would think of me doing YouTube. But it's so funny how those people were the same people that started to care when I came out with merch. I didn’t start posting again until my senior year of high school. Honestly, that is the biggest regret I have because I could grow so much more than I currently am on my platform. One of the biggest advice tips I would give to new YouTubers is to be yourself and don’t do SUBforSUB. You will eventually grow organically if you just stick to making content instead of self-promoting on other people's platforms.

What are your hopes for the future of your channel? What will your channel look like 2-10 years from now?

I plan to hit 10,000 subscribers by the end of the year and start doing some college interview related series videos and more videos with my townhouse roommates. I hope 10 years from now I will have hit 1 million subscribers and will be living and working for Disney in Orlando, FL while also making content for my channel.

Finally, why should people subscribe to your channel?

I think that people should subscribe to my channel because I am very open to making any type of content and I am always kind, humble, and mature in making any of my videos.
